    Hello.

I would like to create an e-learning site and I’ve been doing some research on which CMS to use. Before jumping in I wanted to find out few things, but most importantly is this possible with MODX

So I thought I should ask community about this
I will explain what I would like to achieve.

A student registers in site, but he has to be accepted by administrator before he can use site.
There will be learning materials available for all students, but I will also need possibility to add individual materials for only one particular student and/or student group.
It would be great if learning materials could be sorted by months, years, and other criteria
Learning materials used will mostly be in pdf and word format.

It would be nice if integrating a simple forum wouldn’t be very hard.

For me modx is great for regular/simple sites. But this will be quite a bit harder, and I’m not sure if I can do this with modx or should I look for some E-learning specific CMS like moodle ?
Are there any mods that could help out with this or will I need to make everything from scratch ?

    Thanks !

      Wonderland,

I think you could easily use MODX Revolution as a document holder(sharer), I am assuming you would put up files like PDF, Word Docs, Excel, PowerPoint, ect. All you need to do for this is create a content type for each type of document you wish to upload/use. See: http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Content+Types And instead of linking to a bunch of documents you will want to create each document as a Static Resource: http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Static+Resource. You can then create permission on each page/resource to which group or groups can see them. See members pages docs: http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Making+Member-Only+Pages.

As far as a forum goes I am not sure about that, I thought I had read a while back one was being developed for MODX.

But if you are wanting an actual LMS(Learning Management System) you will probably need to do a lot of custom programing as there is no grading system professor evaluations and other LMS specifics.

      Hope this helps.

This can absolutely be done. See http://licensecoach.com for a very robust example.

Integrating a simple forum isn’t possible ’out of the box’ (yet), but it can be done with some scripting knowledge and the tools that MODx provides you with.

I was able to integrate a Vanilla forum onto a site rather easily - although ’easy’ can be very subjective grin

            Thank you for replies guys.

Since I don’t need very complex system I think I might as well try modx for this project. Too bad about forum, but I think it wouldn’t be too bad If I just installed phpbb on a new directory.

            Thanks again!

You might want to save the forum for last. I’ve heard rumors of a native MODX forum add-on.

Not so much rumors as in development, although still in early alpha.

We’ll be relaunching the MODX forums on DIscuss in the near future as a very real world proof of concept.
