I have set the first class and its being applied to all the 1st items in all my submenus as well
is there a way to stop this?

You can be very specific in your css as to how you want the various levels styled.
#menu ul .first {color: red;} /* top-level first item will be red */
#menu ul ul .first {color: green;} /* all submenu first items will be green */
I have a very complex style assigned to my first class.
Ill give it a go with css anyway, thanks

Just make sure to give the ul ul .first the simple styling after you specify the complex .first styling; then your .first styling will only be applied to the top-level .first item.
If you aren’t applying any of the dynamic classes to the inner row items, you can use custom chunk tpls for these innerRowTpl items, and omit the [+wf.classes+]. Then the inner rows won’t have the .first class.
