text-decoration: underline css trouble with cssplay dropdown menu-- HELP!

Hi Modx friends. I a have a simple, yet perplexing problem. I used MuddyDogPaws cssplay dropdown menu which works like a charm, except that I modified to have to underline instead of change colors when you mouse over a menu item.

I can get the lower level items to underline when I mouse over them, but not the parent item.

I want each item to underline separately when moused over. oy.

Hi,
Sure thing. Note the underline part here. But I wouldn’t recommend it, though, because as written, all links in the dropdown will be underlined. I’d say skip it. Unless you want to learn a lot about the CSS cascade.

but I do! I do want to learn about the cascade!

I’ve tried the route of having them all underlined and it just looks sloppy.

if not here. do you know of an exceptionally thorough resource?

As I recall, a lot of "Muddy’s" example menus were adapted from Stu Nicholls’ phenomenal menus. Part of that sheer awesomeness is a deep understanding of the cascade. Essentially, you need to be able to carry a whole lot of data in your head at the same time without getting lost. If you have a multi-level menu, and you want different styling at each level, hello cascade!

It’s a lot to absorb, though.

Although we all love to quickly search the web to find things out, whenever I get a really nasty problem, or to do any serious learning, it’s best for me to go back to the "bible", CSS Mastery:

Yes, it’s an actual book. OMG! SO totally old-school!

I also answer questions on a CSS forum, and more and more each day, people just want to be spoon-fed the answer rather than ever learning anything. Human nature, I guess.

That’s true. Along with the CSS forum, I also answer questions on the Wordpress forum, and it’s REALLY getting bad there. That’s a downside of their massive popularity. MODx should take heed - growing slowly might be good.

A small sample of the typical nonsense there:
(actually the same stuff could apply to almost any popular open-source system)

Hordes have really bad hosting, the cheapest possible, and are stunned when it sucks. Can you say Godummy? And many hosts are worse than that.

Many people wanting a site have no tech skills whatsoever, and they’re too cheap to pay a developer or programmer.

One-click installs allow the complete neophyte to install WP, but once it’s there in its /blog folder, they wouldn’t know how to move it to save their life, they don’t know how to use it, and of course have no idea where or what their database is.

Because it’s free, people also expect free tech support, and fast! And some are rude when they don’t get a response, or even rude when they’re asking the question.

Many will not read even the smallest amount of information to figure out how to do anything.

The most tragic cases are the questions that are in very broken English, so they’re pretty much screwed.
