Hi. I am looking into upgrading my web site by installing a CMS. I have looked around here, and I have a few questions. I am having trouble finding a full list of features, so if I am missing it, please let me know. But, what I am looking for is:

    - fully functional forums
    - front page news
    - publish to news directly from a forum post
    - customisable resources sections, so that I can create a number of sections and subsections, and allocate articles to them
    - user blogs
    - rss feeds
    - image storage
    - document sharing
    - wiki (although this is not essential)
    - chat (also not essential)

I dont expect to get all of these, and I am happy to install free plugins to get as many as possible, but right now I have no ideas which are possible in MODx.

Also, the forums here seem fairly comprehensive. I am currently using phpbb for my site. Is it possible to integrate phpbb into MODx to share a login/member table and only have one member account for both? If I decide to drop phpbb and stick with the MODx forums, are there any limitations or things that I would notice missing?

And, I assume that layout and theme are easily customisable?

    Many thanks in advance.

EDIT: I have read an older review of MODx, and there are two issues in particular that I wonder if they still exist, or if they have been resolved with the current version.
    - limit of 5000 documents for the entire site
    - unable to search within the forums and not the entire site (or even within a specific board/area of the forum)

    Thanks again.

      - fully functional forums - on the way in the form of discuss - also some work done on integrating existing forum software(don’t do them so not fully up to date on where these are at a search of the forums should reveal some ideas on this)

      - front page news - Use of getResources(revo) or Ditto(Evo)

      - publish to news directly from a forum post - Don’t Know

      - customisable resources sections, so that I can create a number of sections and subsections, and allocate articles to them
      - user blogs - http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Creating+a+Blog+in+MODx+Revolution
      - rss feeds - yep
      - image storage - what do you mean by this
      - document sharing - same as above
      - wiki (although this is not essential)
      - chat (also not essential)

And, I assume that layout and theme are easily customisable? - very easy, at least as far as pages are concerened forums again depends on the implimentation

      Many thanks in advance.

      - limit of 5000 documents for the entire site - not in revo
      - unable to search within the forums and not the entire site (or even within a specific board/area of the forum) - the forums here are currently run on SMF not modx direct so that would be down to the SMF software

      Thanks again.

As with all things modx there are several ways to achieve some of the above.

Many thanks for your reply. I found the Discuss site here (I think that this is the right place):

        https://github.com/splittingred/Discuss

Do we know how far away these forums are? Also, is it possible to fully integrate MODx with another currently existing forum (I know that these boards are SMF, but do they integrate to a single login, and how about phpbb or an alternative)?

To be honest, I am finding it really hard to find a decent CMS with a good forum included right now.

By image storage and document sharing I mean a gallery or similar where logged in users can upload their pictures and docs to their own specific area for others to view/download.

Also, when you say ’not in revo’ do you mean that this is no longer a restriction, or that this has not been rectified in tevo?

        Thanks for the help.

This has been done for Evo, but as far as I’m aware there’s nothing similar for Revolution.

          Alternatives could be:
          SMF Integration
          Vanilla Integration

Or if time is not an issue, wait for Discuss to come out wink

MODx is infinitely customisable, the html/css markup is entirely up to you. Any limitations would be from the forum software.

That did apply with Evo but has been addressed and is not an issue with Revo.

          - unable to search within the forums and not the entire site (or even within a specific board/area of the forum)
That’s nothing to do with MODx at all, but the SMF software used for this forum. The new forum (coming soon) will feature much improved searching. In fact you can try it out now by posting ’add me’ to this thread. Google (site:modxcms.com/forums ’query’ ) always works fine for me smiley

          Hope that helps!
