I’d like to configure Wayfinder to indicate the existence of a document preceding or proceeding one being viewed within a specific level. In addition, I would like this to be a visual indication rather than textual – in other words, a graphic of a navigational arrow rather than a page name. Is this possible? If so, can you please provide pointers on how I need to configure the filters and/or templates?

Thanks. I think using Ditto with &tplPaginatePrevious and &tplPaginateNext is going to work.
On second thought, this won’t work because it’s not a ditto call.
