Limiting documents in Wayfinder multi-section output

Hi All,

I’m working on using Wayfinder to display what I would call "multi-section" list pages, i.e. instead of just displaying the documents in one container (section), via Ditto, Wayfinder will display all the sub-sections under a parent section, with the documents listed under each section, by using &ignoreHidden. That is, the section/containers are in the menu, but the documents are not.

I couldn’t figure out how to do a multi-section list with Ditto, at all, but Wayfinder looks like it may work, except for the question I have here.

This is my Wayfinder code:

My question is:

How can I limit the number of documents in each of the subsections (containers) to a certain number of documents, like 3? I tried using &limit, but it only displayed that number of total links. For example, this is what I’d like to see:

Parent Container (a section called "Columns")

- subsection: Column name "A"
..... document 1
..... document 2
..... document 3

- subsection: Column name "B"
..... doc 1
..... doc 2
..... doc 3

It seems to me that Wayfinder will display an unlimited tree of subsections, which is great. My main point is that the documents that are not menu items should be limited to x number of docs. Thus, for certain super categories, I can display a mini site map of the sub-sections under that category, and list the 3 most recent articles in each section.

This is for an online journal. Here’s an example of what I’m doing in my own hand-rolled Perl-based CMS, that I’d like to replicate in MODx (although this example only shows *1* document in each sub-section):

Finally (although I asked this question in a different post), I’m trying to sort the documents by publish date desc, but the publish dates are not in yyyy-mm-dd format, so the sort doesn’t work. It would also be nice to be able to sort the sections by the menu display ids, but the documents within each section by publish date desc.

I suppose I could write my own snippet to do this, but I don’t want to have to reinvent the wheel.

that could be done with multiple wf calls, and limiting each to 3. i don’t know any other way.

Yes, it could, and with Ditto too, but that would remove the automated feature of the whole thing, which is the actual goal.

In other words, just like the Wayfinder menu itself, it’s very valuable to have the sections show up under a parent container, without having to program anything.

Thus, when one adds or deletes a section, it would automatically propagate.
