Managing Wayfinder URLs - custom menus?

I’m building a standard site with primary and secondary navigation. Fairly standard, done it many times. The difference this time however is in the structure of the secondary navigation, where the top item on the secondary navigation is the selected primary navigation link, and groups together some of the pages under it:



The only way I can get this seondary menu structure is to create a duplicate ’Our Services’ page, making it a sub-folder of the actual ’Our Services’ page, and using this to group the menu items & build the menu:



You might wonder why this is a problem? Because it leads to an additional unnecessary segment being added to the URLs just to group the pages, moving the keywords further down the URL. And to a rather untidily structured website.



Is there a better way to do this with Wayfinder, another extension or even a good way to do custom menus in MODx?

Not quite bennyb - I think what I’m after is multiple startIDs, so I could create menus that collect together different trees from around the site. If that makes sense!

E.g. a menu shown in /portfolio could include /portfolio and all sub-documents, /testimonials and all sub-documents, and a link to ’contact us’ as well.

So are you saying you some sub nav items could be in a couple of main nav items?

Or u just want some sub nav item to be in there own group followed by the other non grouped sub nav items.

Could you use a TV which states if the item is grouped or not-grouped.

Then to create your sub nav use two ditto calls instead of wayfinder. First ditto call that filters out items which only has grouped as the TV value. The the other call all not-grouped items.

Apologies if i’m way off track with reagrds to what you are trying to achieve.

You should build your own custom menu generator.

Create a snippet and use the modx APIs to select the documents you need then output the result.

I don’t think "should" is quite the word. I’m interested whether this can be done using Wayfinder or one of the standard snippets, and if not then why not - is it considered a bad idea? Does no one need this feature save me?

A custom menu generator is probably the way forward, but at present there’s too many other things on to develop one.

maybe the new Wayfinder 2.5(?) will be able to handle multiple start IDs. I personally solved one of my problems by creating a Web Link.

for the rest I had to do a custom snippet.
