New Wayfinder Tutorials

Hi everyone,

For a while now I have been toying with the idea of writing some Wayfinder tutorials. I took the plunge a while back and actually did it; Now, these are somewhat long-very-detailed-even-my-grandmother-can-do-it type of tutorials/lessons meant to thoroughly cover all of Wayfinder’s parameters. I have organised these in about 14 lessons starting from the basics to advanced stuff.

At the moment, I need advice on where to post the lessons since I presently cannot host them myself. I am torn between the modx wiki and "freebies" such as blogger. Blogger would be easy and straightforward but will make it hard for anyone else to edit the tuts in case there’s something to be corrected. The wiki on the other hand I am not so conversant with though today I have gone through the help pages. In addition, like I said, there’s the issue of length and screenshots (image sizes, etc) to consider.

Could the community please advice me on where to put these up? I plan to post say a lesson a day, hopefully finishing within 2 weeks max.

If the answer is to post them in the wiki, should I post in the "Beginners" or "Snippets" category? Also, is it possible to paginate wiki entries? Many thanks.

Great stuff!

I for one would really like to grab the entire lesson package rather than digest them one at a time.

Is there a way that a sticky could be created here with a download link to a zipped lesson archive?

I think the wiki is a good place. Or maybe drop Smahingred (Jay) or Ryan a note and see if there is a place on the new site for them. You can always put them on my blog (will be ready by the end of the week), content is welcome

Definitely make them downloadable, and post them here.

And also, well done, detailed wayfinder tutes are desperately needed.

Will post in the wiki and also upload a zipped pdf or chm version. I’m yet to finalise the latter half of the lessons but should be done soon.

@shane: thx for the offer to post on your blog; you should probably wait and see if the tuts are good enough to make it to your blog, ha!

I spent a really frustrating afternoon trying to figure out how to get a jQuery accordion style menu to work with Wayfinder. After several hours of trying this and that I gave up for the day feeling really stupid.

There are several threads that contain some clues to this problem solving exercise but no real "start here and end there" explanation.

I tried getting a friend into MODx but the entire how to create a custom navigation with Wayfinder was a source of frustration. The Wiki and the MuddyPaws sites cover a lot of ground and list all the various parameters but its almost like information overload.

What is missing are examples with the actual code (calls, chunks and CSS) that go from the most basic menu to more complicated submenus and jQuery menus. Actual examples within MODx using Wayfinder that brakes down the inner workers line by line would be a great teaching tool I think.

I look forward to these tutorials. I am also considering making a series of video screencasts on site construction with MODx. The problem I face is verbalizing some of the MODx concepts in a clear manner. That and the fact that any such info might soon be outdated with the new system on the horizon.

I know its been said many times but the frustrating thing about MODx is the explanation on how to use it...

I feel you Max...I suppose that’s why we, the community, need to chip in as much as we can to help out with the documentation, etc. Please go ahead with the screencasts if you can. Thx
