Styling active menu on side navigation

Hello all,

I am trying to style the active menu option, and am having some problems.

Changing the active link text colour doesn’t work (I read somewhere on here why, something to do with the link style overriding the active link style). So I thought I’d change the background colour instead.

So, it works ok on a page like this:

But a page with submenus (nested ul’s) the background colours around the submenus:
http://www.granitenet.com.au/groups

Any tips on improving this?

I was thinking of having a no repeat background image, but thought there might be a better way.

It’s because the inner <ul> has the class "sidemenu" and so the sidemenu CSS rules override the rules on the containing <li> element. You need to remove the class on the inner <ul> or change it’s name so you can style it differently from outer <ul>.
