First item in list by default set to "active"

Is it possible to have the first tab or menu item classified as active by default when the page is loaded? After loading the page, I have to click on the first tab in my horizontal menu to set it active.

Ultimately, what I am wanting is the active styling set to the first tab initially. Then, after clicking on another tab have the first tab return to a non-active styling.

I don’t think joel4is means that at all... he wants to style the active tab. If the user is on the HOME page the HOME tab is a different colour from the others since it’s the active page.

I wanted something similar when I was using accordion menus.
