Welcome to MODx. Sorry about the shortcomings of the documentation. The community is working hard to try and remedy that
OK, you say you have installed the Wayfinder snippet and have also called it in your website template.
Next..
1. You need to create chunks that will hold your WF menu’s tpls (think of them as Wayfinder templates in the sense that they are the building blocks for structuring your menu
)
For each tpl, you need to create a chunk. Remember or note the names you have given them. For instance, on the muddydogpaws site, there is a chunk called cssplay_parentRow which is the name of the chunk that holds the code for the Wayfinder tpl &parentRowTpl
Using this as an example:
1. Create a MODx chunk and give it a name. In this particular case it is called cssplay_parentRow. You can give it a different name if you wish.
2. Put the following code in the contents of that chunk you have just created. You can edit the code as you wish. For instance, I prefer not to have the ie conditional CSS inline, but create different CSS file for them. The code:

3. Save the chunk you have just created.
4. Repeat the above process for all the WF tpl chunks you will want to create. For the menu you want there are 5 such chunks. So, do the other four.
5. Add the names of your chunks to your WF call
[[Wayfinder? &startId=`0` &level=`3` &parentClass=`hide` &parentRowTpl=`cssplay_parentRow` &outerTpl=`cssplay_outer` &innerTpl=`cssplay_inner` &rowTpl=`cssplay_row` &outerClass=`menu` &cssTpl=`cssplay_dropdown`]]
Save your website’s template where you have that WF call and preview your page. Your menu should have been generated. If not:
a) Make sure the names of your tpl chunks match what you put in your WF snippet call
b) Make sure the documents on your website have been ticked to be shown in the menu
c) Make sure your documents are published
