Okay, I’m going to start off this post with my favorite statement, "I am not a programmer". The reason I say this is because when I am met with development challenges my solutions are derived from working with existing tools like Wayfinder, getResources, etc...

I am also the only, pure MODx developer in my company. Our other folks are Drupalists.

As we get projects and evaluate the needs of the user one of the criteria for building a site in Drupal vs. MODx has been whether or not the user needs to create and maintain a large data set. This can be addressed with MODx, but the document tree is simply too unruly past a certain size, especially for an end user to manage. I would like more of these sites to be developed in MODx, but I don’t currently see a tool that I can use to help address this.

I have been experimenting with UncosNews lately and it occurred to me that this type of tabular approach (image below) to managing data through the MODx admin interface could be applicable a wide range of requirements and users.

What I am proposing is a discussion on how valuable a tool something like this would be. It would obviously need to be created in such a way that the developer could generate the necessary fields (much like TVs), there should probably be the ability to create multiple instances, searchable, etc...

Does anyone else see the value in developing a tool like this? Is it such a departure from the way that MODx already handles data that it just wouldn’t be practical?

There’s an addon called xdbedit by Bruno iirc that makes it quite easy to create those grids for custom db tables. Not entirely sure about the process xdbedit needs for that but it may be worth to check out smiley

If you look at other addons with component pages you’ll see those grids a lot...they’re real nice to work with.

Thanks, I will take a look at it. I am not seeing it in the Package Management, is it a manual install?

It indeed seems to be a manual install still. I think Bruno’s preference is to not put stuff in the repo until it has been properly tested.

The main topic is here: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php?topic=56636.0 and installation instructions are on the Wiki: https://github.com/Bruno17/xdbedit/wiki
