As I change the modxmenu.css to let the menuitems have their own width with padding, the menu starts strange behavior in IE: the nesting lists blink in a horizontal row instead of the block mode they are supposed to appear.
I tried to wrap the whole stuff into a new, table-based template, but then the javascript-dropdown isn’t working.
What the javascript-dropdown does depending on?
How to have the text-dependent width of the items get to work in both IE and FF?

It is so fruscrating when I try to make a small change that is OK with FFox, but it behaves completely undesireable with IE!

You can forget IE5.5+ incompatibilities using the wonderful javascript of Dean Edwards.

I used that a few times, but it often caused a terrible "flash" of old styling, then switching to the new as the javascript got processed. I’m sure that there were ways to work around that but I never did find them.

Susan, maybe this can help: Flash of Unstyled Content (FOUC).

No, this was a different issue. I’m familiar with the FOUC problem. The issue was that the page would display with the usual IE6 styling, until the js file got uploaded and read in, then the styling would suddenly change to the updated version. It may just have been my system; at the time I was running a very old computer that wasn’t behaving very well anyway. It was also just one specific issue involving complex float relationships that IE6 doesn’t handle well.

                Great! Thanks, rambat!

Few more questions: I just found ’csshover.htc, pngbehavior.htc and sleight.js’ in the assets/js directory.
It seems to solve the same issues that the IE7 js does.
Which one you prefer, what differences, if there are, and why this one is packed with MODx, not the other (and why can’t read about it in docs)?

Those two files handle the "hover everything" problem and .png transparency issues. They have come with MODx for some time now, and are a lot smaller than the IE7 js file. Actually, the IE7 comes in a number of versions with minimal functionality for what you are trying to do; you don’t need to use the full file if you don’t need it.
