My clients complain that if they take their attention away for a minute, they loose the work they were doing adding subject matter to a page. The system asks them to re login. Can the system timeout be increased?

If you have root access to your server, you can set the timeout setting on php.ini. But as far as changing it in application level, we might need to wait for someone who knows this better than me. Sorry, I wish I could help you more.
Jeff/Bravado should have some insight here.

I once set the session_save_path in the .htaccess file to a folder in my /manager area, and it didn’t time out, but I had to hack up a utility to clear them out from time to time since this way they never go away.
I had to do this to get MODx to work on 1&1 servers where they use a crude form of clustering that does not allow temp directories to be accessed outside the web root. But, unless you are deploying on such a wacky environment, I recommend not having your session files stored in a location accessible by the web server. You should configure your session_save_path in php.ini or equivalent and set it to a temp directory somewhere outside the web root.

Softwell,
Respectfully, many people who don’t share your religious beliefs would rather not see proselytizing on a technical web site. Loose the signature comment please. I find it offensive.

Did you ever find a way to extend the timeout?
I am facing the same problem now.

No I have not solved the timeout issue. I don’t have a php.ini or .htaccess file on my server as mentioned in previous posts.
I believe that you can use session_save_path() in your .php files, and keep the session files in a local folder. The problem is that you have to make the call every time you start a session, so it has to precede every session_start() call in every file where it occurrs.
