I have been looking at modx revolution tutorials and youtube videos as I am thinking of using it for future projects. I have experience in a few other CMS systems (Wordpress, Perch, Expression Engine and custom ones) so I under stand how they work in different ways.

The one thing I am trying to work out how i would do it with modx is making custom elements that fit inside a page and are manageable. Say for example I wanted to allow an admin to control call to actions that consisted of a title, image and url. How would I set this up in Modx, from what I have seen everything is set as pages?

The other is a little more straightforward, when you use create blog articles are they all listed as pages in the side column tree navigation? The reason I ask is I can see over time this list becomes MASSIVE.

Thanks for any tips or advice in advance.

If you follow the standard blog tutorial the posts will be on the left under resources yes...

Regarding making things more manageable look into Template Variables and Snippets.
