Is there an easy way to take a MODx Evo website and migrate it to another server?
Ideally without re-installing everything from scratch, including the database.

Sure. Take a full backup of the site, files and database (clear the cache and empty the System Events and Manager Actions logs first). Make sure the new database has the same charset and collation as the old one. Upload the files to the new server, use phpMyAdmin or some other client to import the saved .sql file. It’s best to zip the files and upload them all in one go, then use your domain’s control panel to uzip the site in place; less likely to end up with a corrupted file upload that way.
You will most likely need to edit the manager/includes/config.inc.php file to update the database connection information.
You should now be able to log in to the new Manager, and need to go to the Configuration and the Interface and Features tab to update the path, and do the same in the File Manager tab, then save the configuration.
The most common problems in this procedure will be file permission differences, and the RewriteBase line in the .htaccess file if your old or new site are in subdirectories off the web root.
Great step by step and detailed explanation Susan.
I’ll let you know if this went on smoothly.
Thanks =)
hi,
one thing you’ll sure have to do is, once you’re done with the procedure Susan gave you, chmod the assets directory, and at least the assets/cache directory and its content to give wrting permission to all, this before you update the config in the manager or you’ll probably have an error due to the permission

The file permissions depend on how the server is configured. If it’s running PHP as CGI/FastCGI, most likely 644 for files and 755 for folders will be fine, also if the Apache mod_suphp is being used. Otherwise, it will need 777 for folders and 666 for files that need to be written to, such as the cache files and image thumbnails.
Everything worked out perfectly guys, thanks for all the help!
