    Hello,

I a beginning programmer I know some PHP and I’m searching for the best tools for me to develop secure interactive websites with complex functionality.

I found in reviews that Modx Revolution is an awesome CMS and I also found elsewhere that Symfony is great.

However, the more I read the more confused I get.

What would be the best tools for me? And how can I combine their power best?

I am not good at graphical work and making complicated front ends. I am good though at inventing complex functionality.

I need tools that help me cover all the field. And make those fields that I am not so good at, easier to me.

Can any body help me on this one? and explain how Modx could fit into this scheme?

      Hi webdrifter:

I know absolutely nothing about Symfony, so any meaningful comparison between that CMS and MODx will have to come from someone else.

Like you, I know "some PHP" (just about enough to be dangerous grin). MODx has made it easy for me to utilize my PHP skills in building some reasonably complicated functionality into my sites. Unlike the Big 3 (WP, Drupal, and Joomla) and similar systems, MODx doesn’t insist on squeezing you into its mold when you’re trying to do something new. Instead it acts more like an intuitive framework, keeping useful tools out of your way but within your reach. This is why the devs like to call it a "content management framework" instead of a "content management system."

It’s hard to address your particular situation from what you have shared about it, but you may at least be sure that developing complex interactive websites with lots of complex functionality is the specialty of MODx. I cannot objectively say that there is no system better - since I have never used another comparable system myself - but I can say that MODx absolutely excels.

If you are not good at developing graphical front-end stuff, I am afraid there is no tool that will be of much help to you in that area. Using MODx could help indirectly, however, because another of its great strengths is its total separation of frontend from backend, HTML from PHP. If you end up working with someone who is good at design, or using premade templates, you will find that it’s much easier in MODx than it would be in, say, Joomla.

Hope this helps clear things up a bit.
        Jason

Thanks for the answer. I indeed know hardly anything about making graphics, page layout and templates. If I do want to do that myself without having to learn to much what would be the way to go? It doesn’t need to look very fancy. Functional and a bit fancy would be enough.

Best way is to find a few nice tutorial sites and spend some time going through step by step.

Here’s a nice one for creating a website mockup in Photoshop which will give you an introduction to designing on a grid (a simple but important technique for creating a balanced layout), along with some techniques that are popular in modern web design:

There’s a follow up which then takes you through converting the mockup you’ve just created into a working HTML + CSS web page, with a little jQuery thrown in for good measure. This is very useful - not everyone has a flair for graphic design - but you can work with a designer or purchase pre-made templates quite cheaply, then just code it up yourself:

And... subscribe to some design blogs such as Smashing Magazine to keep up with the latest tips and tricks related to web design and development.

Well if there is a html template that you already like it would only take a few minutes to get to work with modx really. The thing I loved about ModX was the templating and that it’s pretty much just html. So you know someone who can make you an html template or you know a premade one you would like to use it wouldn’t be hard for either of you to integrate modx into it.
