Hey all, I have 3-4 different Modx sites going, with a slightly customized Frontpage editor.
I haven’t changed ANYTHING on some one of these sites, which is having the exact problems as the other. The problem is that, when I click the edit button, it creates two instances of the front page editor. I have to click close twice. It’s also kinda bonked my CSS, it doesn’t behave as it used to. I’ve noticed a lot of ’weird’ stuff going on with Modx.
Am I crazy, or are there more ’moving parts’ than I know?

First, you need provide the information requested when posting about a bug. See the note in red right above the Post button that begins "HEY YOU, READ THIS!"
Either way, I’d still like to know if Modx has the ability to be modified with out me doing so. Can the authors update MODx installs remotely, without my permission?
Depends if your using evo or revo, post the required info and we can help
Simple answer no.
The developers do not go looking for sites to update.
There is no automatic updates that is your responsibility if you are the site owner/maintainer.
If you provide the required info someone will try and help you.
DEVELOPMENT ENV:- Ubuntu 12.04 | MODx Revolution 2.2.8 | LAMP 2i Apache 2.2.22 | Php 5.3.10 | Mysql 5.5.31 MySQL client version: 5.5.31
I think that answers my concern. I notice a lot of instability with the system.
Theres no instability with the system, If you don’t want anyone to be able to update the packages you simply create a user group for them and not allow them access to that area, looks like you just dont understand what permissions people have and how to restrict such things and blaming MODX for it.
This might not even be the issue, but unless you give more details then we can’t help ( 3rd time asking for more details now ).
You can easily update MODX extras like FrontPage, but MODX itself has no auto update. Some hosts, e.g. Bluehost, have a SimpleScripts install of MODX that does allow updating MODX.
I’m guessing that your instability is the result of an addon package (it could be FrontPage or TinyMCE since you’re seeing it when editing), not MODX itself, and might go away if you uninstalled or updated that package. It could also be a problem with your server configuration (which is why you’re being asked about it).
You might look at NewsPublisher, which also provides front-end editing.
