    hi Susan

    with all due respect, is it healthy to cling to something that’s not as good as the next version, just because that’s what you’re used to?

    As you say, "I’m not familiar enough with Revo to know how it works." i’m assuming that Revo will be better than Evo. If not, why would they build it? If Revo does not have everything you love about Evo, it should!

    Maybe i misunderstand-- is Revo intended to be a better Evo, or a totally different, parallel product?

    i did not mean "Evo will be phased out", i just meant "no more new development, other than bug-fixes". That way, existing Evo sites will continue to be supported.

    your grateful apprentice,
    johny

      Is a Mercedes bus (they use these a lot here) better than a Mercedes convertible? Depends on what you want it for. I can drive a Mercedes convertible, but I don’t particularly want to try driving the bus, although I probably could in an emergency.

      Likewise, I can and have worked with Revo, I just don’t see the need for it. If I get a call for a heavy-duty web application where it would be more appropriate, I just refer the prospective client to one of the Revo development teams (I’ve sent a few to Wordpress as well, when all they wanted was a blog site). So there’s plenty of room for everybody to be happy. There are others still working with Evo too, and while development is not up to the level of what it is now for Revo, it’s by no means moribund.

        So you mean revolution is a different product, with a different purpose, and not superior successor to evo.

          Just to throw my 2cents in here.... I develop in both Evo and Revo pretty heavily, and I would say they each serve a specific purpose. I don’t consider one to be superior to the other as-is. You need context to determine superiority. For some projects Revo is, in my opinion, overkill, and is actually inefficient, in the sense that you’re using overhead you don’t need, like using a revolver to kill a mosquito. And for other things Revo is just perfect, and to use Evo would be really stretching it beyond what it’s meant to handle. I use other CMSs as well, like Drupal and Silverstripe (just started recently) and WordPress. For me it’s always about determining the right tool for the job and then picking the one that will do the job with minimal overhead and maximal efficiency. Which is why I use both Evo and Revo and will continue to do so smiley

            On this same topic, I'm trying to dynamically define a value in the CSS with a value derived from a chunk or snippet.

            Static example: font-size: 100px;

            Dynamic example:
            font-size: [[$chunkname]]

            or

            font-size: [[snippetname]];

            So far, I'm not able to make this work. Am I doing something wrong? Can this be done? Is there another approach? Any help is appreciated.

              No reason why it can't be done, as long as the css is in your template or you're using a resource for the .css file. Keep in mind that .js and .css files are requested independently by the browser and are served directly from the file, without passing through MODx, so no MODx tags will work.

                @tahoeg, it definitely is possible you can use if and output modifiers in your css and js files that are generated by MODX make sure you select the proper content type in the page settings.
