        thanks for asking:

I know that Quip is the Revolution replacement for Jot, its just that QUIP is very "limited" compared to JOT (until now)

        cheers

Yeah, it would make migrating from evo to revo much easier if the evo snippets were upgraded for revo.
Ditto has a revo version so why can’t jot have a revo version too?

I think it is really stupid to not think about backward compatibility when making new versions of things.
Ok, maybe not totally stupid but careless.
It’s like saying yeah we got a new super duper version but all your old code won’t work and now you figure it out yourself how to upgrade.

A fair point, but most of the Revo replacements -- getResources for Ditto, and FormIt for eForm, in particular -- are infinitely more efficient and have much cleaner code, so there’s an attempt to get people to convert to them. In many cases, the older components were cobbled together over time and ended up with very poorly designed, non-OOP code. For most of them, it was much faster to start over than to try to port them and the result is much better performance and easier-to-maintain, more reliable code. Some features are missing, but because the code is so much cleaner, it will be easy to add them.

Another issue is that the core developers (all two of them) are busy writing and fixing the core. They wrote some quick ports and basic replacement add-on packages and hope that others will step up with enhancements, bug fixes, documentation, and tutorials. It’s a community effort, after all. Feel free to learn PHP and xPDO and do the Jot conversion. wink

BTW, the Revo version of Ditto is deprecated and conversion to getResources is fairly trivial in most cases. I can’t speak to how difficult it is to convert from Jot to Quip.

Having ported about a dozen Evo components to Revo, I can tell you that it’s often an major task, though not always. I expected NewsPublisher to take about three days and it took a month of working all day every day.

Do you have any examples of the limitation of Quip against Jot ?

Jot does not even support threaded comments...

But I am not going to do the Jot conversion! A community effort it might have been some time ago but now that there is a company behind it that is trying to make a profit... see the "partner solutions" where you need to hire an "Expert" to figure things out.
Reminds me of the Magento people where they make things so complicated and convoluted that people have to pay to get "support"!.
Actually, we believe our system is far less complex than many. The Partner Solutions page is there to help foster the community, allowing more developers to be able to use and make a living off of MODX full-time. Plus, you have gotten an enterprise-level product in MODX, for completely free. Most people do not complain about things they get for free. They help improve them.

I am definitely upset about this so called progress with bugged and "deprecated" and alpha, beta addon things.
If you’re upset about it, maybe you could supply a fix, or at least a bug report in the proper place?

It even also reminds me of XOOPS with all their bugged addons.
Actually, most of the addons are quite stable, with far less issues reported than many other systems addons. If you have a specific issue, maybe you could elaborate?

Working on the core is one thing but without useful and debugged ADDONS the core is useless.
I beg to differ; but then again, I’ve got about 30+ addons, do the lead UI work on the core, made the entire modx.com Extras section, am busy writing a native forum solution for modx, was a part of developing the modx.com site, wrote a majority of the documentation on rtfm.modx.com, and constantly provide people like you support in the forums. So, you could say that I’m hoping that those who find that work inadequate could simply decide to stop complaining, and learn a bit of PHP and submit bug reports and fixes.

AND not to forget a Clear UPGRADE path from evo to revo!
We have documentation on how to do so, but do not recommend doing so unless you absolutely need to due to the vast differences in the products. This is why Evolution is a different "product" than Revolution - not simply a version upgrade.

For new customers I am even thinking about going back to Joomla because of the more established addon components.
Feel free to, but I seriously doubt you’ll find the quality and flexibility MODX offers there.

Rant away. We appreciate candor. wink

If you spend much time on the MODX forums, I think you’ll see that a ton of free support is available for people willing to work through finding a solution to their problem, and the documentation is improving all the time. The paid support is for people who either aren’t willing to do the work, don’t have the time, or don’t have the necessary skills.

I can tell you for sure that no one is trying to make things difficult -- quite the contrary. Everyone I know who is involved with MODX is trying desperately to make things as easy as they can be, but the power and flexibility of MODX often make that a difficult task and our available time is finite. MODX Revolution is relatively new and the highest priority right now is working on the core code.

If you want a straight blog that works well out of the box, WordPress is an excellent choice as long as you don’t need to customize it too much. Joomla is a much more mature product, but working with it makes many people feel like they’re trying to type with mittens on. wink If it does a better job of meeting your needs, though, it’s a good choice for you.

Actually there is a lot more that can be said but should probably go in another forum topic.

What does need to be said again in this topic is that there is still no migration path for Evo JOT users who want to move to Revo!

No kidding. It really makes me angry when I think about how much I paid for this software that it doesn’t do everything I want. Oh wait . . . I didn’t pay anything. Never mind.

                      You are overeacting.

Take a deep breath and look again at the doc for revo.

Getresources and Quip are official replacements for Ditto and Jot, and there are both more powerful and constantly updated, which, for jot is a big change compared to the old Evo unmainted php snippet.

                      http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Upgrading+from+MODx+Evolution

Please note, that Revo is still young (less than 1 year) and improve at a steady pace.

Despite your concern, if you love the concept behind MODx, you’ll come to love Revo as much developers loves it now, and will come back to this thread, read and smile...

Just for my information, why do you want to absolutely use Revo if you’re confortable with Evo ? You know that it is not an abandonned child ?
