    The parent field should put up a message that says "please select a node in the tree at the left" when you click on it. When you click on a resource in the tree (assuming that the resource tree is showing at that point), the current resource (the one you’re editing) will get the parent you click on in the tree. This is to organize the tree. The structure of the tree will determine the menu structure created by the Wayfinder menu snippet, it will also affect site map and other snippets, including getResources as described above. You can also just drag the resources in the tree to where you want them.

    Menu index just determines the order in which any resources at a particular level in the tree will be processed (i.e., siblings). When you drag resources around in the tree, or change a resource’s parent, the menuindex numbers will be reordered automatically. You can leave the menuindex field blank if you like and let MODx assign them. In fact, the only required field is the page title, though the alias is semi-required -- it will show in the URL if Friendly Aliases is turned on. Long Title, summary, and description are only necessary if you use them in your template. And of course there’s usually not much point in having a document if it has no content. The date fields should generally be left alone unless you want to set a future publish and/or unpublish date.

    The menuindex part above is a little oversimplified because you can choose to tell many snippets to sort the resources by other fields if you wish (alphabetical by title, createdon date, editedon date, etc.). And you can tell MODx to sort the tree in various ways using the sort-order icon a the top of the tree. The default is menuindex and most people leave it that way.

    I hope that all makes sense. wink

      ... Don’t get me wrong, I love MODx ...

      Just my 2 cents: Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an easy way to add some practical tips in http://rtfm.modx.com for everyone?

        Excellent idea!
        A badly needed, potentially great solution!

        Currently GetResources is just a senseless waste of time!
        I believe, we need to point out the emperor has no clothes!
        Inadequate documentation can and will conceal many-many bugs!
        We, GetResource users, have been admiring a buggy and crappy product for way too long!
          Best regards,
          Mike

          This may help get to know getResources. I have got some way to making an example site for newbies. I’m a newbie myself, so it’s slow work, but at least I get to meet the problems myself. It’s at http://www.tgsketches.me.uk/cranford/

          The site has code displayed at the bottom of each page, and hopefully it will give you some help in using getResources. Later there ought to be an accompanying annotation site.

          @BoBRay, thanks, I didn’t know most of that.

          @mw11:

          (except for the ***[[!getResources? &parents=`0`]]*** code that dumps to the screen a dizzying array with all resource fields.)
          (OR for the ***[[!getResources? &parents=`1`]]*** code that dumps to the screen a dizzying array with all resource fields.)

          You need some kind of output chunk for getResources to display its output to. That’s what it does when there isn’t one. Make a chunk called showMe and put &tpl=`showMe` in the getResources call. The code for showMe could be something like this:

          [tt]
          <p>
          <a href="[[ ~[[+id]] ]]">[[ +pagetitle]]</a>
          </p>
          [/tt]

          Hope I’ve got all that right. That’s a tilde, not a minus sign in front of id.

          Good luck

            Right except that the tags shouldn’t have any spaces in them:

            <p>
             <a href="[[~[[+id]]]]">[[+pagetitle]]</a>
            </p>

              For my 2 cents on the subject of documentation:

              I’ve been working with MODx for a little over a year now, and have only done 3 sites. 1 in Evo and 2 in Revo. I’m a designer and don’t know the first thing about php, mysql and arrays or anything else of that nature. I can handle html and css and that’s it.

              That said, I have been able to do some amazing things with MODx that I would have never been able to do otherwise and that has been because of the documentation and these forums. I agree that there are areas of the documentation that are lacking and could be better but I think it’s pretty good for something I didn’t have to pay for. And when I can’t seem to figure something out I search on the forums and usually find an answer or someone answers my questions.

              I believe I figured out a basic getResources call from looking at the documentation and the example given for setting up a blog. It is a little different but once it clicks in your head it is pretty amazing tool.

                Thank you guys!
                Thank you, thank you, thank you!
                Thank you for all of you who have made an attempt to help!

                After a lot of wasted time, I finally have been able to succeed. No, not with GetResources - which I believe is worthless - but with Ditto.

                1) Because Ditto is slighly better than GetResources.

                2) Unfortunately, Ditto is pretty close to the level of GetResouces.

                3) Unfortunately, IMHO, Ditto’s documentation is just as crappy as that of GetResources. This means we GR users need all the luck we can get. Because we need all the luck! Because, IMHO, the GR documentation is so cryptic, so terse, so useless, so misleading that it falls short of providing any real help!

                4) Unfortunately, this message board has also been little or no help to me -- however, perhaps I can use this board once in a while to vent my many-many frustrations as to (MODx + Extras)!

                5) Unfortunately, with free software like MODx/GR/Ditto, we need all the luck we can get!

                6) My luck manifested itself after my many-many Google searches. It manifested itself in the form of an unrelated web page by an unrelated 3rd party that described one useful trick as to how to use Ditto. Had it been not for that one page, I would’ve thrown away both Ditto and GR!

                7) Now that I’ve been able to use Ditto for a few days, I can fully agree with the previous poster, CBorah. Guys, I can tell you Ditto is amazing because I’ve been able to do some amazing things with the (Ditto + MODx) combination that I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise! Thanks to the crappy/lousy/inferior documentation of both Ditto and GR! I cannot emphasize it strongly enough in this short post that there are MANY-MANY things in GR/Ditto documentation that are lacking and could be better!

                8 ) To claim the documentation is pretty good just because we don’t have to pay for it is a good one, a laughable one, too -- because we don’t have unlimited time! We really-really don’t have unlimited time! IMHO, what’s the point in trying to save $19.95 (to pay for GR) when we end up wasting 999 hours of our time, per person? Is our collective time completely worthless? Is your time worth only ($19.95/999 =) 2 cents per hour?

                9) And when you can’t figure something out, you search on the forums and can usually find an answer or someone answers your question? Good for you! This has not been my experience! My experience has been totally different!

                10) I strongly believe Google searches are far better! For example, I figured out one of the Ditto calls by doing a Google search, and then viewing a 3rd party web page! And that was due to Google! The 3rd party’s setup was a little different, but once it clicked in my head, from that moment it became a pretty amazing tool for me, too!

                11) However, why this incredible carelessness as to the GR/Ditto/Extras/MODx "documentation"? Why put out CRAPPY/USELESS/INFERIOR documentation in the first place -- documentation that wastes everyone’s time? I don’t get it! Why waste everyone’s time?

                12) I believe the problem is NOT bad people. The problem is incredibly POOR communication skills, especially poor tech WRITER skills. Therefore we, and up to 10,000,000 prospective users suffer, and collectively we waste (10,000,000 times 999 hours =) 9,990,000,000 manhours!

                Is that what we REALLY-REALLY want?

                  Best regards,
                  Mike
