I am down to the wire on a site. It is a nationwide non-profit group that has many chapters around the country. The client would like to allow a user, when registering and on their account management page, specify what chapter they want to be associated with. I was thinking that group assignment would probably be the easiest way to do this, but I can’t figure out if there’s a way to allow a user to select which group they are in. This may eventually affect which pages they see, but for now it’s just an informational thing.
If there’s a better way to do it, let me know. Just trying to get this site out the door!
Thanks to anyone who responds!
If you put a drop-down list or a series of radio buttons on the login form, the selected value will be available in the $_POST array on repost for processing by a snippet. You’d just put a snippet tag for that snippet in the login Tpl chunk.
The snippet would simply look for a repost and process the value. You could then add the user to the the correct user group, or you could set the value as an extended field in the user profile, or you could make it a user setting. Which one to use is a tough call. Putting it in the user profile is probably the easiest and will make it easier to allow the user to change it when editing his or her profile. OTOH, if you’re pretty sure it will be used to restrict access down the road, the user group might be a better choice, though you could probably change it over later and create a utility snippet to populate the groups from the profile data.
