So I realize that the MODX vs. Drupal discussion comes up periodically on the MODX forum and after searching I’ve found a few posts but most relate to MODX Evo and Drupal 5 & 6. The reason that I’m bringing this topic up again is that I’m getting ready to create an education portal that will have a lot of dynamic custom code written regardless of which CMS/framework that I choose to use, so I want to make sure I’ve done my research and made the best choice up front. Also, as mentioned above I haven’t seen a comparison between Drupal 7 and MODX Revo.
I was initially leaning toward Revo since I’ve heard some good things about MODX and Revo and because I’ve never really liked Drupal in the past when I’ve tested it out. However, after installing Drupal 7 and testing it out for the last couple of days and watching some screencasts on the improvements over Drupal 6.x, I have to say that Drupal 7 is looking much better than Drupal 6.
So, other than the fact that MODX Revo is truly more object oriented, uses more of an MVC framework, and has a tighter community...what are some other things I should consider before committing to one CMS or the other? I know that there is no perfect CMS and each has it’s positives and negatives. Ultimately I think I’ll probably set up a simple test site in parallel and try to create an addon/module for each and see which suits my style better...but regardless, it would be nice to have a few people from this forum give an opinion of what some of the intangibles of MODX Revo vs. Drupal 7 are and include some things that I may not have thought about or may not come across in a simple site test. Thanks!
The problem with Drupal is that it takes a long time for a new version to have enough modules. For example, some modules for Drupal 5 have not yet been ported to Drupal 6, let alone Drupal 7.
I was very excited when Drupal 7 came out. However, now I am disappointed, as it is still a bit buggy and many of my favorite modules have not been ported to Drupal 7.
Compare that to WordPress, WordPress 3.1 just came out and a majority of the plugins are already ready to use!
The same with MODx Revo when it came out. However, now that Revo is more mature, using it is really smooth sailing.
I feel the same way about Drupal. I was very excited about 7 and now the luster has faded as I realize it's taken months for somewhat mandatory or useful modules to be updated. I sort of put D7 aside and waited several months hoping it would be better now.
The Views module isn't stable and it requires CTools which is also not stable for D7 yet. And on and on...
