How to handle Templates, Snippets, Chucks Etc.

I took on a modx project that all their code is in snippets, chunk, resources, and templates. Now I can at least search resources, however cannot search the rest and going mad trying to find stuff. I am going insane with the in-ability to use an editor for these. I mean a desktop editor, ones that can do string replace, search, tabbing, etc.

So other then my rant, is there anyway to link those to files instead of database?

I missed this the first time round.

One thing I noticed in the first link. While that’s an excellent way to deal with using external files, this line

will work; it will include the requested file, but it will also return the status of the return directive, 1 for success or 0 for failure.

will accomplish the same thing without that puzzling 1 in the page.
