what PHP settings could have an effect on this - I’m running Mamp’s default installation?

I’m running this on a fairly standard MAMP setup.
Does your site charset = utf-8 ?
Maybe something in the mb_convert is different ?

this is my setting in the MODx config file: $database_connection_charset = ’utf8’;

are you running MAMP 1.8.3 as well?

it also doesn’t explain why the ’auto’ setting causes this error:

What happens is that phpMyAdmin uses latin1_swedish_ci
as default.

When installing MODx this has to be changed manually (unless the MODx installer have
the rights to create the database)

I don’t see why the DB charset would make any difference as Feedx is working on external data.
Viewing the rendered feed from the front-end with

in the site template shows the apostrophes correctly for me.

Could it be the cache file and is mmjaeger using [[...]]?
