I’m not sure what’s going on, because I tried it again and now it’s working. I used blank templates for the header & footer that I originally tried...The only thing that I can think of that changed is that I moved my website from my test directory to the root, but I don’t know why the item template would work and not the header or footer.

Possibly you didn’t clear the cache before testing it earlier?
Possibly...but I had the page set to clear cache after save...

The page was not cached by Modx...I don’t think I tried a hard refresh. Either way, when I had the website on my test server it would return a error 500 unless there was some placeholder present.
