Hi, I need to build a multi-autor blog - something that allows people to sign up as members and post short stories, like www.fmylife.com. Users will also be able to post comments, just like a community blog. I just don’t know how to set up the blog with multi-author access. I would really appreciate any suggestions.

If it’s just random people who can become an author, then you should look at the WebLoginPE Snippet -- it allows people to sign up to the front end (known as web users). If it’s people you know who are going to be authors (e.g. friends or co-workers), then you can set them up as manager users via the back-end manager. The latter requires nothing special -- you just add the users and assign them permissions.
MODx doesnt provide that facility out of the box and unless you are willing to develop something, you should look at other solutions like WPMu.
