When ur host doesn’t make any backups (it only makes total server backups and I have to pay to get a sitebackup), is it possible to make a db backup by cronjob or some other way?

Hi, found this article with a number of great suggestions:

10 Ways to Automatically & Manually Backup MySQL Database

Note that’s only for the database. You might want to look into backing up your files too, especially if they tend to change or new images, pdfs, etc are uploaded often. Also, depending on your hosting setup you may or may not be able to setup a cron from your hosting control panel (cPanel, Plesk, etc)...

Your rite, offcourse it’s pritty handy to have the zip of the files too, why didn’t i think of that lol. Db backup is do-able but also backupping files getting hard because of the zip size and available hosting size.

indeed, this script looks pritty good, u can specify maps u like to backup.

I’d imagine that the routine there could be adapted to multiple databases and targeted to certain folders, file types, etc. I modified it to work on a sandbox site and couldn’t quite get the multiple database part to work (my fault, I’m certain). But I was just goofing around with it to see in principle how it worked. It worked fine...

I’ve been looking into setting up automatic backups to a cloud service such as Amazon S3. It’s very cheap for the amount of storage I’m likely to need. Even if your host does provide backups, it’s nice to have the peace of mind that your files and db are safe with a third party... just in case!

Seems forum member Everett has already created a backup script for Amazon. Looking into it.

Also, I wonder what free storage providers might be out there as well. I’ve found DropBox very useful but don’t think it can support backups by FTP.
