Hi!
I’m new to MODX. I’m considering using it for a new project. I hope that the flexibility of MODX will lend itself to this end.
I need to make a small website, aimed at two groups of users: Group #1 uploads pictures (several at a time), Group #2 views the pictures (with the ability to sort them according to category) and may choose to buy them.
I need this feature to be completely editable, so that it fits the design of the site and so that I can make it look exactly like I want to. I don’t mind editing the plug-ins myself - although I’m not well-versed in php, I have considerable programming experience.
I want to make the design myself, unless it is a simple matter to edit some template.
Do you know how I would go about creating something like this? Is MODX the right choice? All advice is appreciated.
It seems that MaxiGallery + SWFUpload can realize some of the features I want.

It can definitely be done, but I don’t think there’s anything available out of the box so you’ll need to develop something yourself, or hire someone to help you out.
Personally I would store the data in a custom table and use xPDO/MODX objects to work with them. You can create your upload form which creates the entry in the database, and manipulate (display) the data in any way you want.
Do note that MaxiGallery is for MODX Evolution, I would personally use Revolution whenever there’s custom coding involved.
Thanks for the reply.
Couldn’t it be done like this:
It has to be possible for users from group #1 to register as users. So some user-managing plug-in for that.
They upload pics. Eg using SWFUploader
I get an email sent, where I approve the pics, and add tags.
The pics appear on another page, nothing fancy, just the big-sized pictures in a single column, filling 70% of the screen.
Next to every pic is an add-to-basket link. Some webshop plug-in for this.
Perhaps it will be easier to make this all from scratch like you say, but is this possible?
Are there developer’s guides for MODX somewhere?

I don’t think that’s a good reason, Mark.
Use Evolution if you want the common vanila mysql command, use Revo if you want to use xPDO.
Both have APIs to help you develop faster.

MODx is great, but knowing how to use it well makes it perfect!

Everyone should use what they like better - you can also use mysql in Revolution, or you could even just use xPDO and build from there. My preference is Revolution, not only cause of xPDO but in general the flexibility and power. Evolution.. well.. I wouldn’t call it bad or worse, but I guess I’ve been spoiled by using Revolution over the past months.
