Using Breadcrumbs

I am trying to use Breadcrumbs in my template and want to limit the number of levels it shows. I’ve tried this:
[[Breadcrumbs? $maxCrumbs[2]] but with no luck - it keeps on showing all the levels.

Also, the breadcrumb links are wrong. I am using friendly URL’s so I understand that I need to have something like this in my template code <base href = [(site_url)]"/> but I am unsure where to put this (in the head or the body?) Also, I am unsure in which form the "site_url" should take (http://www.<mywebsite.com?)

to call snippet the correct syntax is

[[snippetName? &paramName=`value` ]] or [!snippetName? &paramName=`value` !]
The first call is cached the second is not

the <base> tag goes in the <head> of your html template
