Hi All,
I’d like to know good practices under MODx Revolution.
I spent time to search in the forums but I didn’t succeed to find something helpful on these topics.
Here are several things I don’t know how to handle :
- Safety Backups : Is there a simple way to automate backups of both the base and the files on another location ? I used a module under MODx Evolution called ModBak. Is there something like it in Revo ?
- Test things in my computer and update my online site : Is there a way to test things in a local server (I use MAMP) and after to put them in the production server IN A VERY SIMPLE WAY ? Because, sometimes when I work a long time on something (because I need to scramble a lot) It’s very difficult to make it work on the production site because of the n+1

steps I’m missing somewhere... (since I’m not a profesionnal web designer...)
- I can’t understand how to simply manage image files. for example: How to enable a user/writer to embed a picture in an article he wrote that won’t be saved in a big-messy-folder-where-you-waste-lots-of-time-to-find-something ? Is there a way to change the name of a file without loosing all the related links to it ?
- More generaly, is it possible to add automatic Modx rules to user downloads and how to ?
- How to use database fields to store informations I don’t want to see/store in the template variable ? For example when I want to create a simple catalog with only 3 simple fields, is there a way to do it and to be able to access it from my MODx Revo site pages ?
- Is there a way to use the parser of MODx to perform several tasks I need for my site ?
For example, I create a container resource named "Glossary" containing other ressources each defining a word : music, tempo, rhythm, note, long pause, short pause, etc. Is there a way to parse a document in order to automatically add a link to recognised words to their pages, like :
Long pause and
short pauses are
music, just like a
note.
Are Lexicons useful for this ?
Thanks for your help !
