For client who use Hostgator, which has an in-house program called QuickInstall and does not provide Softaculous, I have been considering offering automatic updates through QuickInstall. I will of course give the proper warning that the updates are one or two versions behind the most recent ones, but this is still more often than most of my clients would update if asked to pay for manual updates.

However, I have heard that automated installers are unsafe and can wipe out custom data. Is this the case with MODx, and in particular with Quick Install? Of course, I would stay away from modifying any core files that might be overwritten.

I am also worried about future modification to the installation: there is no "modify details" or import of existing installations. There is only "install" (with or without auto-update) and "remove".

Anyone have any negative experience or recommendations regarding QuickInstall or other automated installers?

I prefer doing it manually. That way if I screw something up, I know where to look for. smiley

I prefer doing it manually too, and charge a very low fee for updates - but most of my clients are not concerned about security and do NOT want to pay for updates. :’(

I’m only considering this as a possibility for clients who would otherwise never update their site.
