Hey,
I just tried installing 96 last night with no avail.
I saw the modx page that has the install link and when I clicked it it took me to a blank page...?
mysite_url/install/index.php.
I checked the permissions and made sure everything was 777 so as to not have any problems. I added the .htaccess, index.php and index-ajax.php files and created the database before I tried the installation.
Server:
FC6 - linux
php 516
mysql 5
apache 2
Has anyone else had this problem or know what the problem may be?

I turned php safe mode off but forgot to restart the apache server for the new configurations.

I have the same issue on one of my hostings... what exactly did solve your problem?
By the way the backend just runs fine!
