Welcome to MODX
Those two links are only needed when you’ve locked yourself out: meaning you forgot your password, and the email recovery option is not working (either due to a non-existing email being entered, or something being wrong with your email).
If you’ve simply forgot it, just click on the "Forgot login?" link on the login form, and enter your emailaddress. You will then get instructions via email.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, for some reason that forgot email option is not working. I’m slowly looking into it and I can’t tell if I’m doing something wrong or if it’s something else.
I’ve looked at my DB entry for modx_users and I changed my password according to the steps outlined. I also went to modx_user_attributes and verified my email address in the system. Even though my email address is correct, I get the error message, "User not found with that email". So that’s where I’m at right now. I’m coming to the conclusion I may need to uninstall/reinstall, I guess.

If you changed the password in the DB, doesn’t that allow you to login with the new password you set?
That’s correct. I am unable to log in with the new password and it doesn’t recognize the existence of my email address either. I just verified the config.inc.php file to see if the info regarding my DB is correct. it seems so. I would assume I’d get errors regarding the database if that were the issue. I had barely used this installation of Modx for a few days before it stopped working. Is this just some fluke circumstance?

This is the first topic I’ve seen since joining this community with that problem.
What version of MODX do you use? And can you share some of your environment info (see red box under the posting form)? Is there anything in the error.log that can help debugging this?
Linux server
Apache v. 2.2.17
PHP v.5.2.16
MySQL v. 5.0.91
Revo Traditional version (I believe)
Browser: Chrome
I think that’s basically it. Nothing else is really involved.

Something that comes to mind is removing the cache files.
But before you do that, can you check the contents of core/cache/logs/error.log ?
I can check that log. Im not sure what to look for though. Anything here I should notice?

In the best scenario it’s empty
Anything that mentions user, authentification, fatal errors loading files...
If there’s a lot in there, you can upload it as an attachment or trim repeating errors.
