I’m interested in managing multiple sites from 1 manager at a central site. What makes things complicated is the fact that all the sites (including the central one) are on separate (shared) hosts so php scripts from the central site, where the manager would be located, has limited read and no write permissions at these hosts. However if this is possible, all the assets have to be served from the central site - doesn’t that contribute to loads of overhead or is there something I’m missing entirely?

Different sites on shared hosting - Maybe connect separate MODx EVO instances with each other.

No, you cannot use Revolution to manage multiple sites spread across multiple servers, each hosting it’s own site. You can use it to manage multiple sites on a single host or even on multiple servers running in a load-balancing configuration, but definitely not across shared hosting platforms.
