ThermX fundraising thermometer snippet

This is a modification of a Wordpress plugin. It shows fundraising progress on a thermometer. I added a nice burst at the top when the goal is reached. It’s done in pure CSS so no Javascript is required and it seems to work in all browsers except IE4 and a few Ubuntu browsers. It’s a little tricky to wrap text around the thermometer so maybe some of you CSS gurus can suggest improvements.

Expand the zip file in the assets/snippets directory, paste the code from thermx.php into a snippet called ThermX and use this snippet call:



The first number is the current amount raised, the second is the goal.

It sets two placeholders. The first is just the current amount, the second displays the thermometer:

<p>Our progress so far: [+thermx_progress+]</p>

[+thermx_thermometer+]

Let me know if you have any problems or suggestions.

[Update] Uploaded thermx1.0.1.zip - much improved. Mercury is now accurate to .25 percent. Separate thermx class file. A few minor bug fixes. The directory structure has changed somewhat so you should probably delete the files you have before unzipping this one.

The Revo version is available at the MODx components SVN.

BTW, there is a third (optional) parameter: &thermxFormat which lets you pass a format string to be used by the number_format() function so it can be used with other currency formats. See: http://us2.php.net/number_format. It defaults to US currency format and I haven’t tried it with anything else.

When I said it was tricky to wrap text around, I should have mentioned that the design I dropped it into is a 3-column, liquid-center, holy-grail type design so the difficulty I had is more likely to be the site design than the snippet itself. I haven’t tried it in a simple fixed-width design yet.

It’s just a graphic display of fundraising progress. You update the amount raised in the snippet parameter: &thermxProgress and it shows it on the thermometer page. I think davidm was referring to using it to show fundraising for the MODx project.

It could be used on any site that wants to show progress toward a goal. The units would normally be currency, but I guess it could be used to show any kind of progress toward a goal that could be measured in units.

I’m working on a Revolution version now. It works fine in Revo -- I’m working on the installation package.
