    I am developing a front-end administrative system for ModX that uses Prototype, Scriptaculous and Ext. Currently, there isn’t much to it other than document editing, but the potential is there to create a very robust add-on system that incorporates user administration, file and media management, gallery management, product and inventory management, etc.. The purpose of this is 1) for my clients to be able to manage content on their own without access to the manager, 2) to create a separate ’drop-in’ system for each new project, and 3) creating an architecture that will allow me to easily update clients to a newer version of ModX and the Admin system independently of each other.

    The primary document management features available are:

    • Drag & Drop of documents/folders within the tree to resort and move
    • Viewing the document contained in its template before editing
    • Adding/Deleting/Duplicating of documents

    To install, unzip the folder (_admin) to the main ModX directory (where index.php is) and point your browser to [site]/_admin/install. You will need to create a new (web) user on the install page (make sure the user doesn’t already exist) and it will automatically install everything it needs to the database. You will need to login as the new web user and go to [site]/admin (no underscore this time) if you have friendly urls on, or [site]/index.php?id=[+id+], where [+id+] is the docId of the new document ’admin’.

    Notes/Caveats:
    1. This has only been tested on version 0.96
    2. The script will create a number of documents, snippets, chunks, templates and template variables, including a login page with an alias of ’login’, so if you have friendly urls on and a page with an alias of ’login’, change it for the time being
    3. I develop in Firefox, but checked it out briefly in IE7

    Please provide any feedback, suggestions, criticism, etc. This is a project that I am committed to whether the community responds or not, but if people are interested, I’ll keep the progress public.

        Installing it: Works fine, no problem!
        Editing a document: No problem here either!

        Create new document:
        No success: I get an empty page saying "Document Manager" but I can’t find any way to edit it, and I don’t see a new document in the tree. Am I missing something here?

        I think this is a great idea, and I hope you’ll keep the progress public! smiley

          Interesting idea. We’re in fact using Ext in 097. smiley

            Okay, I’ve made some corrections and re-uploaded:
            @heliotrope: install script fixed. If you don’t want to reinstall the whole thing, open up the _admin/install/insert.php page and remove everything from lines 3-461, then change all of the occurrences of
            ’introtext’ => NULL,
            to
            ’introtext’ => ’’,

            @Uncle68: Problem fixed... although ignore the ’delete’ and ’duplicate’ buttons on the toolbar.

              I uploaded _admin to my modx folder

              I ran _admin/install/index.php and made a new user, and it said click here to start using your admin area.

              I click, and it gives me the files list.

              I did everything you said, but it just gives me the index of the folder. Do I have to add a new document or something? I’m using friendly urls.

                You should just be able to point your browser to {your_site}/admin and it should work, but I wouldn’t recommend using that version. I am in the process of developing this more completely and I’ve changed a lot around since the version I uploaded, including having it run semi-autonomously from ModX (only interacting using the ModX API). I’ve also updated the project to using EXT version 2, which requires a full rewrite of the modules. Once I have a more stable development, I’ll repost it here.

                  The the attached version shouldn’t be used?

                    I wouldn’t. I’ve got a new version in development that is much better. The problem is that it integrates with ModX in a completely different way, so if you want to play with that version on a dev box just to get an idea, go for it. Otherwise I wouldn’t recommend it.
