Hi all-
It’s quite possible that there are a bunch of other RSS aggregators for MODx out there... but I didn’t see any offhand so I made an effort to port
MagpieRSS to MODx. I’d say I’ve had a fair amount of success.
Magpie:
- Allows an arbitrary number of feeds to be aggregated in one RSS container instance
- Is capable of having several RSS container instances per page
- Is templateable
- Allows you to specify how many items from each feed you want
- Gives you the option to remove all, some, or no HTML from feeds (if for instance you want a text only feed in a side bar)
- Allows you to specify css style prefixes for each RSS container and feed if you so desire - so you can style each feed independently
And so forth. So it’s pretty much doing what I want and I thought I’d post it here for some peer review.
Known Issue:
For some reason, the MODx feed (
http://feeds.feedburner.com/ModxBlogFeed) is tempermental. I imagine others would be too and it’s difficult to just "trust" feeds to be perfect. The problem is, if it botches up, then there’s a parser error and the whole page goes down. That’s not good. So I’m looking for a way to ignore errors. Returning blank RSS containers would be better for production sites than a parser error!
For the MODx feed, when I try to allow all items or anything above 10 it dies. 9 or below works fine. I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with the number, but a specific RSS item. So your numbers may vary. Regardless, I’m perplexed.
But without further ado- I’ll slap the zip file in here (complete with documentation - shamelessly modeled after Wayfinder doc

)
Oh one more note- since the file is zipped, you can’t read the documentation until after you unzip it because the doc is zipped in there... probably didn’t need to be said, but I find it a humorous irony.
