I know there has been much discussion about multiple sites from one install. I need to do it with sub-domains. Is there a general best-practice on this now? (Revolution)

      Hi,
I eventually got this working for subdomains. Multisite with any system begins to push the limits of my server knowledge. smiley

I hope this saves you a few steps. You’ll see near the end of the thread where the solution is reached. I had made a couple incorrect assumptions about subdomain context settings at first, and once I fixed those, it worked just like the multisite demo in the Revo documentation.

Bottom line - it can work!

Thanks Samba, I did see that thread from a search, but wasn’t sure if that was were we were at.

I’ll do some more reading and take a shot at it.

I’m exposing my ignorance. I didn’t know about Contexts till now. But that begs the question; why do the big scary Evo tutorial when you can use contexts?

I want to use one file system. The sites would be very similar to each other, same CSS and all, just slight tweaks to some of the page contents. It’s basically for a customizable replicating site.

            Hi,
Hey, we’re all newbies to multisite, at least most of us. smiley I would definitely tend to use Revo for this, as it’s better set up, even though I am still a Revo cynic, as the bugs are worked out.

I agree, doing this in Evo requires more guile and cunning. I have done some stuff where you use a plugin to intercept incoming URL’s and distribute them to a particular doc root and template, maybe, but that’s pretty hack-ish and cheesy. Beyond that it takes more grief than I’m willing to undergo. Susan had a good Evo tutorial about that someplace here I think, which might be what you saw.

Thanks Dave, but you misunderstand me. I am using Revo but the only tutorial is for Evo.

There's also a tutorial for topdomain use.

Make sure your domains are hosted on the same server. [ed. note: lucasdegen last edited this post 14 years, 3 months ago.]
