    Hi There,

I have my first MODx website up and running and i’m thrilled about the CMS! I used MODx to redesign and develop an existing website and I have a question about that..

I’m waiting for google to index the new website, but when I click on links that are in google now (to the old website) it will display the home of the new website, instead of a 404 error.. That is bad for SEO.
It doesn’t matter what I type after www.mydomain.com/ .. so www.mydomain.com/imonthetoilet will show the homepage www.mydomain.com.

    Any help? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have the error page setting left at it’s default of 1.

if your using revo then create a resource which will be your 404 page and make sure it’s alias is set to 404,

Now click system -> system settings

and in the search box type error and press enter.

now click the number to the right of the Error Page, and change it to the resource number of your newly created 404 page.

I’m sure Evo has similar settings but i’m not sure what they are. EDIT : sorry just re-read the title you are using evo so just follow the steps above.

If you would look at the request, you will notice it is returning HTTP status 404 but is serving the homepage as error page. Peteedly explained how to change that already. smiley

Thanks to both of you! Didn’t knew about the error setting and yes indeed, the pages are returning a 404 header. Shame on me haha, learning every day.
