    Hi,

I love Revo and I’m trying my best to learn it inside and out, it’s awesome so far. My only complaint is that my client’s server is slow.. not too slow, but slow enough that I feel like it’s impeding on my productivity/development time. Has anyone come up with a good method of installing and developing on a local copy of Revo and then publishing to a live install? If so, could someone point me in the right direction?

I have considered just dumping the MySQL DB on the live server and using that for a local install, and then just dumping my local DB and pushing it when I am ready to publish my changes, though I’m not too familiar with the innards of how MODX works and I don’t want to make any changes that might alter the stability of the live site.

    Thanks,
    Tom

      How slow is slow?

Also, please provide more information about the server:
HEY YOU, READ THIS! If you’re posting about a bug, please state all of your Environment information in your post: Version of MODx, Traditional or Advanced distribution (for Revo), Server OS, Server Version, PHP Version, MySQL Version (client and server), is pdo_mysql installed, your Browser type and version, if you are using any opcode caching such as eAccelerator, APC, winCache, xCache, etc; any relevant errors in core/cache/logs/error.log, and any other environment data we should know. We can’t help you without that information.

You can install and develop locally. In fact that’s recommended. There are instructions in the documentation for moving sites to a new server.

Is it a shared server? What company?

I am using a VPS on Dreamhost, when switching between Chunks and Resources and TVs and the Files tab it’s not instant, or as near-instant as I’d like it to be. I am now working on installing my production server on my local LAMP machine for development. I installed a fresh version of MODX Revo and dumped my DB from the live server, imported it in phpmyadmin on my dev server, and I’ve now got all my resources/files showing locally in the manager, when I go to view the site locally however I get:

HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

My MODX Error Logs are showing:

I figured this is because I don’t have the packages installed on my fresh install yet, however when I go to install them they are already in the package manager. I try to remove them from the package manager and I get this error:

            Console running...
            Grabbing package to remove...
Successfully grabbed package. Now attempting to remove transport zip...
Target directory is either not a directory or writable: /home/cafecyclist/tccyclist.com/modx/core/packages/
Could not transfer package breadcrumbs-1.1-rc2.transport.zip to /home/cafecyclist/tccyclist.com/modx/core/packages/.
            Could not load transport package.
Error removing package with signature: [[+signature]]

How can I deal with the difference in folder structures between the live and production server? Even before I tried doing development locally, ModX was giving me errors installing packages on the production server (though I already had all the packages I needed so I didn’t try and fix it), for example when I tried to install codemirror:

            Console running...
Attempting to install package with signature: codemirror-1.1.0-pl
            Package found...now preparing to install.
Target directory is either not a directory or writable: /home/cafecyclist/tccyclist.com/modx/core/packages/
Could not install package with signature: codemirror-1.1.0-pl
Could not transfer package codemirror-1.1.0-pl.transport.zip to /home/cafecyclist/tccyclist.com/modx/core/packages/.

              Error
Could not install package with signature: codemirror-1.1.0-pl

p.s. sorry about the long time in reply, i hadn’t realized anyone had replied (i expected an email notification)

Did you do an upgrade install after moving the site to the local environment? That’s necessary to straighten out the file paths. You may need to reinstall some components to get their paths straightened out.

Also, you may need to uninstall the components manually and then right-click on them in the Package Manager grid and select remove (force removal). They are trying to use the original paths to uninstall their parts.

The workspace is trying to use the original paths, not the packages, if the OP did not follow the moving your site to another server instructions or run setup in upgrade mode after moving it. In fact the only thing that might likely break with packages after moving it to a location other than where they were installed is that the restore option during uninstall is likely going to fail on the filesystem parts. IOW, I recommend NOT uninstalling packages after a server move. I develop sites where I never work with packages on the live site, only on my local development copy, but it would be problematic to try and work with them in multiple locations on a recurring basis.
