Revolution.. Evolution?

I keep hearing how Revolution will use revolutionized code over 0.9.6.3. How different are we talking about here? Should I stop reading the doc because the code is going to become radically different. Also I don’t quite understand the 1.0 versions called Evolution? How do they tie up in the whole works? Is that your going to be releasing evolution and then revolution?

Also is there a time frame for the stable version of revolution?

Revolution is a total rewrite from the ground up and provides better support for large (6,000+ doc) sites, multi domain, customizable paths to manager (etc), and other improvements. It’s better suited to larger sites and provides a much better framework and documentation so you can expand it to meet your needs. I am going to guess we will be seeing a Beta in the next few months granted sooner is always nice.

Evolution (0.9.6.x) is more of a rebranding effort to bring it inline with Revolution. It will also be a 1.x release which should help overcome any feels about using a sub 1.0 version. It should also contain a new manager theme and some other general improvements. It’s unlikely we will see "Evolution" until next year, but then again I could be wrong...

I understand that, but I want to know how different is the core code? Because I’m going to be hacking the MODX code to bits and I’m wondering if my efforts will be in vain once revolution comes.

The code bases for Evolution and Revolution currently share the basic database structure and nothing else. Revolution is a total, object-oriented rewrite of the legacy code base (which we call Evolution since legacy sounds so negative). They share no real common code, and though Revolution supports many legacy API functions, many are deprecated and will be going away as the Revolution code moves forward.

To say whether it is in vain or not is not my judgement call, but we would certainly welcome you to contribute to the project, either Evolution or Revolution branches, rather than hacking the code. Assuming your changes are inline with community consensus, I don’t think you’ll have problems getting your ideas and/or code accepted.
