I’m posting this so maybe someone won’t waste time figuring out their mistake like I did.
So I was happily porting a clients existing html/css site over to modx. Things were going well and I’ve been satisfied with the quality of modx. However, today I noticed that I could no longer edit content from the manager. Quick edit worked fine from the ’Edit content’ link, but from the manager I got the following warning above tinymce and none of the content appeared in the tinymce edit box:

It baffled me for a little while then I remembered a change that i had made earlier in the day that might be applicable. I had set my Resource URL in Configuration->Interface & Features to [(site_url)]assets/ to fix some problems I was getting with modx generating relative links and paths for items that were incorrect with friendly urls. It didn’t seem to bother anything so I forgot about it and wasted some time this afternoon trying to figure it out. Moral of the story:
Do not use [(site_url)] in your Resource URL
