This is a feature request. I would like to see an implementation of "smart" folders, so that we can include content from anywhere in the site in any folder, based on a query. For example, if I have a bunch of pages that use a certain template spread around the site, it would be useful to create a "smart" folder that pulls in all of the pages that use that template so that I can see them all together. The smart folder would be available in the tree view, but it could potentially also be available in the web site itself. In fact, that’s what I would want. Ideally, there would be an option to make this a public vs. private smart folder. Public smart folders would be visible on the web site. Private smart folders would be visible only within the manager interface.

This is an extension of tags it would seem. The idea sounds really interesting. smiley

I like that idea ... sounds analogous to how Smart Mailboxes function in Apple Mail (for those who have Macs).

As for the front, Ditto can filter by template.

In the back end it would be nice to be able to view documents in alternative methods like filtered or grouped by template (or some other tag), doc tree, flat file structure, etc...

That’s true. Imagine how much easier life would be, though, if the base query was essentially built into the core. It would be the equivalent of stored procedures in a database. Faster, easier, more efficient. In fact, the query could literally be a stored procedure, though it wouldn’t have to be. Or maybe a view.

As it turns out, I am a Mac user, and I couldn’t live without the smart folders that I use in Aperture (a fantastic digital photo editor), or the labels I use in gmail. Gmail labels are less sophisticated than Aperture smart folders. I would definitely prefer the power of sophisticated smart folders.
