Request for Swift mail-module in MODx-core/API

Hello,

currently MODx uses the PHP build-in mail functionality for it’s default mailing. This gives us sometimes headaches with customers who haven’t or cannot have their servers correctly configured concerning php.ini and/or mail-settings.
Imho it would be much nicer and more powerfull if the MODx core would enable us to use the Swift mailer-class (default or optional through configuration) and also makes this class available through the MODx API.

Doesn’t Swift use the same PHP mail() function as well? I’m confused.

MODx comes with PHPMailer, it’s located in [tt]manager/includes/controls/class.phpmailer.php[/tt]

Although it would be cool if you could set the essential PHPMailer variables in the Manager (I’m thinking of important stuff like SMTP server and login settings for them that want to use this, etc.).

you can use the default php mail with swift, but there are lots more options. Even if MODx will continue using phpmailer, it would be essential to give more configuration options, like f.e. SMTP options, authentication, etc.

I’ve been thinking of developing some kind of module/class around SwiftMailer but because of the upcoming changes with 0.9.7 (modules are out), I’m just waiting to see where we’re all going with this. It would indeed be a great idea to be able to configure SMTP infos from the MODx back-end and then provide basic mailing capabilities for everyone.

For now you can certainly add custom system_settings that will be available in $modx->config and quickly create a module for managing those settings; modules will still work on 0.9.7 BTW, there will just be new options for customizing the MODx manager intefaces.

I’ll work on a class/API within MODx 0.9.7 for utilizing whatever method, library, or extension you prefer, and will include a default library that supports SMTP. This can serve as a wrapper for mail(), SwiftMailer, PHPMailer, etc. and provide a consistent and convenient way for component authors to utilize the core mail configuration.
