Is it still possible to download older version of modx - specifically 9.6.3?

My business plan is to ’leap frog’ Evolution and switch to Revolution in about 2 years time when it will probably have all the functionality I need.

In the meantime I need to keep running 9.6.3

Has all the basic information that was on the site for how to use older versions of modx now been removed?

        Thanks Sharkbait.

The problem is that I’ve invested so much time in learning modx and I’m not into coding - I’m a designer that offers CMS to clients. If I have clients running loads of different version of modx I would spend most of my time troubleshooting various issues with new versions - I can’t afford to do that.

To a certain extent my hands are tied. I don’t want to get heavily involved with coding so, I therefore would not make a living from Evolution or Revolution in its current state. My next decision will be whether to learn how to use Revolution when I think it’s right for me or whether to switch to Wordpress.

On top of this the rug has been pulled from under my feet a little with the very recent change to the modx site - in my opinion it’s too much, too soon. That makes me very nervous about the future with modx. I’ve had fantastic support here over the years and I’ve tried to contribute wherever possible but if I was looking at modx as a potential newbie for the first time today - I would be very confused.

Sorry for going on a bit. wink

          Hey chrisandy,

FYI, i just upgraded a 0.9.6.3 version straight to Evo 1.0.5 without any problems ( you shoud check, in case you use it, AjaxSearch. some parameters changed )

you could figure something out with your clients to get you paid for the upgrade, then maybe an upgrade once a year smiley

            Good points Sharkbait.

I’m not sure if all the plugins / snippets I regularly use are supported in Evolution. I just checked and the first one I looked at "Easy Events" works with 9.6. And then GoogleMapMarker - works with 9.6.3.

This is why I want to wait and then leap frog to Revolution.

chrisandy, you’re really playing with fire by not upgrading and addressing the dozens of security issues that have been fixed up to 1.0.5. 0.9.6.3 is not supported and I can’t say if there will ever be a clear upgrade path from there. There will be from the Evo releases.

                Thanks Ryan,

I will upgrade a test installation and make sure all plugins / snippets are working.

From there it should be pretty quick to upgrade my other sites.

Addons that haven’t seen a new release in the past years may not have updated their "works with" information. As far as I know, there’s little actual change between the basis of 0.9.6.3 and 1.0.5 - besides amazing updates, security fixes and other "hot stuff" you’re missing out on.

Nobody’s forcing you to jump on the MODX Revolution boat (although it sure is a hell of a ride), but you should do yourself a big favour and get up to speed and use 1.0.5. A while back I contacted some old clients who were still running (a modified) 0.9.6.3 to tell them that since the release of their website a lot of security fixes and other improvements were released and if they wanted an update (at a low cost).

To illustrate the difference between 0.9.6.3, 1.0.5 and 2.0.7, have a look at these images.

                  0.9.6.3

It does the job, but can be a little shaky and I wouldn’t dare saying it’s safe to be on board..

                  Evolution 1.0.5

Stabalized, improved, shiny. Much more efficient.

                  And Revolution 2.0.7

Do I need to say more?

Yes - it may be daunting to upgrade your ship, but it’s better then what you had, right? smiley

I absolutely agree with your sentiment Mark - and very nicely put!

I’m looking forward to having a play with Revolution and have previously made a small donation to VisionCart but as I’m not a coder I can’t afford to do anything commercially with Revolution.

The way I work with modx is to have a personal installation with a standard set of features for any given site which I can deploy very quickly. It’s served me very well over the last few years but I’m aware I have to make a jump. My worry is the lack of ’ready to go’ add-ons (extras) in Revolution and also sorting out what works in Evolution. So as a designer I probably don’t feel as confident using modx into the future as it seems like I’m going to have to have another big learning curve with Revolution - as it stands at the moment it feels like modx is going in the direction of being a specialist CMF for PHP developers rather than an achievable solution for designers.

Sorry if I’m going a bit off topic.

Most things work similar - yet slightly different..

For instance Ditto (probably one of your best friends) has been replaced with getResources, which is similar but doesn’t exactly have the same features. Wayfinder stayed the same. For user management there’s the Login addon and there’s Quip for commenting.

The biggest changes are probably the back-end (and how snippets and plugins are coded), the security section and other advanced features..
