How to change [(site_url)]

where is set the [(site_url)] variable?
what can I do if I want to put my website on a directory and want to hide it using mod_rewrite?

It is set dynamically.

This is not currently supported, but you can try hardcoding it at the end of the config.inc.php file if you want to. There is a sub-sites hack floating around here that allows these sorts of things, and 1.0 will introduce a new concept called contexts that will allow you to override all of these settings for the main site or any sub-section of it.

Please don’t get me wrong, but I’d wish the development process would be a bit more open and not closed like with a conventional produkt. :/ I think this would unify all the MODx users/developers a bit more and therefore bundle the resources, instead of all these "ah, that’s how it’s meant!", "oh, it’s already there?" and all the discussions about the inner workings of MODx. Involving more transparency as an addition to the actual open source like in various other projects, too.

I’m really looking forward for a public readable SVN repoisitory, where we can follow the current directions and changes.

Just my 2 cents - didn’t want to step on someone’s feet.
