I came into the same problem a couple days ago. I don’t believe the parameters do what they’re meant to by what the wiki says. Not to mention I couldn’t get the &crumbseparator to do anything.
It’s probably a good note that I’m using one template for my home page and another for the rest of the pages.
On the "other pages" I have just the &showhomecrumb.
