How to set a template variable from a snippet

Is there a way to set a TV from a snippet?
I read something about a setTV function but that was a hack.

In the links I see that a new document is always created.
I want to change the value of a template variable of a document that already exist.
I have been trying to get the object ID but all my tries give:

Fatal error: Call to a member function Set() on a non-object in /var/www/www.margareta.nl/manager/includes/document.parser.class.inc.php(769) : eval()’d code on line 9

How can I get the object ID of the current document?

If you just need the document ID of the current document, use this:
$id = $modx->documentIdentifier;
