Also you may try to look at AdsManager module, the latest version right now can be found on the project’s site (code.zixo.ru), the previous - i the modx addons section.

OpenX now has a hosted service option, and from the first read, it looks about as simple to implement as Google AdSense... I’m gonna give it a try on one of my MODx sites... that’s ideal if it can work with Javascript calls... then I can just add a few chunks and be done with it: all management would occur on the OpenX host.

Thats right! I have several sites running with OpenX. It’s very easy to implement and of course it even has JavaScript techniques.

It’s also very simple to install the stand-alone version of OpenX... basically it’s another web application that lives side-by side with your MODx install. Or you can have it live on another domain -- it just needs to plug into a MySQL database and have PHP.

I suppose it’s possible to integrate the OpenX application as a MODx module, but I think that’s probably overly complicating things. You’d have to tweak a lot of their files... I’m not sure how those ports for Drupal and Wordpress pulled it off, but it looks like it’d be more work than its worth. So for now, it’s something simple like this:

mydomain.com/manager --> to go to my MODx stuff
mydomain.com/openx --> to login to OpenX

Why would one manipulate/tweak the OpenX core files if one can use the OpenX API? Unfortunately/luckily all my client’s ads are being administrated by myself, so there is no need for me to create a module. But I am sure an experienced developer could easily do that.

By "OpenX API", are you referring to their hosted service?

There are 2 reasons why we want the local version of their software (installed on our web server vs. using the hosted service):
                  1. Speed -- it’s quicker for us to pull up campaigns etc. off of our local server
                  2. Cost. OpenX has fees for their hosted service if you get past a certain number of impressions per month. For one of my large clients, this is a concern because it is a high-traffic site.

As Everett said: You can install a copy of OpenX on your own server. No strings attached. If you want to you could come up with a module or plugin for modx that lets you control OpenX campaigns right from the manager using the official OpenX API.
